Crucial Clash in World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka Faces Do or Die Battle Against Bangladesh in Delhi Amid Air Pollution Concerns

File

The 38th match of the World Cup is scheduled to take place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, featuring Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. For Sri Lanka, this match is a must-win situation, while Bangladesh aims to secure two more points with a victory. As it stands, Sri Lanka currently occupies the seventh position on the points table, having won two out of seven matches, whereas Bangladesh is placed ninth with two wins in seven matches.

However, the upcoming match is under a cloud of uncertainty due to the concerning air pollution levels in Delhi. While there's no sign of rain or storms affecting the game, the air quality has deteriorated, raising health concerns for the players. Both teams have had to cancel practice sessions at least once due to the thick layer of toxic smog enveloping the national capital. Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) has remained in the severe category, with the likelihood of continued severe conditions until Tuesday, according to the air quality early warning system.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has clarified that the decision regarding the match will be made on the day of the match itself. Match officials will assess the air quality on the day of the game, as outlined in Article 2.8 of the ICC Playing Conditions. This article states that if the umpires agree at any point that field conditions, weather, light, or any other circumstances are unsafe or unfair, they have the authority to immediately suspend or postpone the game.

Sri Lankan players have faced similar air pollution concerns in Delhi previously, notably during the Test series in 2017, when they wore masks, and some players even experienced health issues. Recently, several Bangladesh cricketers reportedly complained of coughing, which led to the management canceling their practice session. The air quality further deteriorated to the "severe" category on that day.

The teams' lineups are as follows:

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Liton Das (wicketkeeper), Tanjeed Hasan Tamim, Nazmul Hussain Shanto (vice-captain), Tauheed Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim (wicketkeeper), Mahmudullah, Mehdi Hasan Miraj, Nasum Ahmed, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmood, Shoriful Islam, Tanzeem Hasan Saqib.

Sri Lanka: Kusal Mendis (captain/wk), Kusal Perera, Pathum Nissanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Sadira Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjay de Silva, Mahish Tikshana, Dunith Velalage, Kasun Rajitha, Angelo Mathews, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushan Hemantha, Chamika Karunaratne.
