Asia Cup 2023 final: SL 50 all out; Mohammed Siraj picks six; IND wins by 10 wickets

Asia cup 2023

After restricting Sri Lanka to just 50 runs, India secured victory in a mere 37 balls, winning the Asia Cup final by 10 wickets. This marks India's eighth Asia Cup triumph. Prior to this, India had claimed the title in 1984, 1988, 1990–91, 1995, 2010, 2016, and 2018. India has won this tournament seven times in the One-Day International (ODI) format and once in Twenty20 (T20), while Sri Lanka has clinched the title six times in ODIs and once in T20. Pakistan's team has been crowned champions twice.

The match, played at Colombo's R. Premadasa Stadium, saw Sri Lanka win the toss and bat first. However, the Indian bowlers wreaked havoc, with Mohammed Siraj taking six wickets and Hardik Pandya claiming three. Jasprit Bumrah also chipped in with one wicket. In response, India comfortably chased down the target in just 37 balls. India's opening batsmen, Shubman Gill (27 runs off 19 balls) and Ishan Kishan (23 runs off 18 balls), remained unbeaten. Shubman hit six boundaries, while Ishan struck three.

With this victory, India has ended a five-year drought in international tournaments. Prior to the Asia Cup 2023, India's last international tournament win was in the 2018 Asia Cup, with Rohit Sharma as the captain. Today, under his captaincy once again, Team India emerged as the Asia Cup champions. After the 2018 Asia Cup win, India struggled to perform well in crucial matches and events. India reached the semi-finals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup. In 2021, they lost in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final to New Zealand and in the 2023 WTC final to Australia. In the previous year's Asia Cup, India couldn't even secure a spot in the tournament, as Sri Lanka claimed the title. The 2022 Asia Cup was played in the T20 format.

IND vs SL Live: Sri Lankan Team Struggles at 50 Runs

Sri Lanka's entire team has been restricted to just 50 runs in 15.2 overs. This is Sri Lanka's lowest score against India in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) this year. Earlier, India had bundled out Sri Lanka for 73 runs in 22 overs in January. This is also the lowest score by any team against India in an ODI. Previously, Bangladesh had scored 58 runs against India in 2014. A score of 50 runs is the lowest in any ODI final. Before this, in the Asia Cup 2000, India had restricted Sri Lanka to 54 runs in Sharjah. Now, Sri Lanka has set a new record for the lowest score in the Asia Cup with these 50 runs.

Mohammed Siraj took Pathum Nissanka's wicket in the first ball of the fourth over, caught by Ravindra Jadeja. He then dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama on the third ball of the over. On the fourth ball, he got Charith Asalanka caught by Ishan Kishan, narrowly missing a hat-trick. The fifth ball went for a boundary. In the last ball of the over, Siraj had Dhananjaya de Silva caught by wicketkeeper KL Rahul. Hardik Pandya also took three wickets, dismissing Dinesh Chandimal, Madushan, and Pathirana. Bumrah sent Perera back to the pavilion. All 10 wickets of Sri Lanka were taken by the Indian pace bowlers. Siraj took six wickets in seven overs, giving away 21 runs. Hardik took three wickets in 2.2 overs, giving away three runs, while Bumrah took one wicket in five overs, conceding 23 runs.
