The clock is ticking as KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer strive to regain their fitness in a bid to secure their spots in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 squad, set to be announced by the BCCI.
Recent reports from TOI reveal that KL Rahul's recovery has been nothing short of remarkable, rendering him fit and ready for selection. However, Shreyas Iyer's situation is less promising, as he is yet to achieve full fitness. With the Asia Cup scheduled to commence on August 30, and less than two weeks remaining, Iyer's chances of making the squad appear to be in jeopardy.
Both Rahul and Iyer, who underwent thigh and lower-back stress fracture surgeries respectively, have been actively participating in their rehabilitation at the NCA. Their efforts culminated in their involvement in a recent practice match as well.
The Selection Dilemma for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer
Reports by PTI previously indicated that the national selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, would only consider selecting Rahul and Iyer if they could endure the demands of 50-over cricket. To assess their readiness, both players were required to undergo match simulations.
In the case of KL Rahul, his ability to keep wickets for the full 50 overs is also under scrutiny. For Shreyas Iyer, proving his match fitness necessitates his presence on the field throughout the entirety of the game. Mere batting fitness would not suffice to secure a spot in the final 15-member squad.
Amidst the selection process, Tilak Varma's impressive performance caught the committee's attention. However, the committee intends to proceed cautiously, wary of thrusting the young Hyderabad left-hander into the high-pressure situation prematurely.
A BCCI insider closely monitoring these developments highlighted, "Indeed, Tilak Varma has showcased his potential and undoubtedly has a future in ODI cricket. But we must exercise caution. Rushing him into the fray could backfire on his development. We must tread carefully, perhaps considering him only if both Iyer and Rahul are deemed unavailable."
The impending squad announcement promises heightened suspense as cricket fans eagerly await the fate of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer's Asia Cup aspirations.
