Following the first T20 International between India and West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago on 3 August, both teams have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate. India was fined five per cent of their match fee as they fell one over short of the minimum over-rate requirement. On the other hand, West Indies incurred a higher fine of 10 per cent of their match fee for being two overs short of the target.
The sanction was imposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. The decision was made after considering the time allowances, which resulted in the respective teams failing to meet the required over-rate.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players face a five per cent fine of their match fees for each over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time, subject to a cap of 50 per cent of the match fee.
Hardik Pandya and Rovman Powell, captains of India and West Indies, respectively, pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the proposed sanctions, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
The charges were brought by on-field umpires Gregory Brathwaite and Patrick Gustard, with support from third umpire Nigel Duguid and fourth umpire Leslie Reifer.
