Celebrated all-rounder Ben Stokes has performed a stunning U-turn on his decision to retire from ODI cricket, setting his sights on the impending World Cup in India. Named in England's 15-man squad for a home series against New Zealand in September, Stokes's return has sparked excitement and anticipation among fans and pundits alike.
Senior national team selector Luke Wright expressed the collective sentiment, stating, "I am certain that every fan will enjoy seeing (Stokes) back in an England ODI shirt again."
Wright revealed that the New Zealand ODI series roster would serve as England's provisional squad for the World Cup. Stokes's reentry to the England Men’s ODI set-up comes alongside the inclusion of uncapped Surrey speedster Gus Atkinson in the squad.
Stokes had announced his ODI retirement in July 2022, citing the demanding schedule and his desire to concentrate on Test cricket after taking on the captaincy of the Test team.
Renowned for his heroics, Stokes played a pivotal role in England's history-making World Cup victory in 2019. He was named player of the match in the thrilling final against New Zealand, contributing an unbeaten 84 in a nerve-wracking Super Over finish.
The dynamic cricketer extended his magic to the T20 World Cup in 2022, orchestrating England's triumph. Stokes's unbeaten 52 off 49 balls in the final against Pakistan propelled England to their target of 138 with an over to spare. His contributions solidified England's unique position as the sole nation holding both T20 and ODI World Cups simultaneously in men's cricket.
Stokes's return injects vigor into England's ODI World Cup aspirations, given his experience in Indian conditions and his knack for delivering under pressure. Having participated in 105 ODIs since his 2011 debut against Ireland, Stokes's remarkable record includes 2,924 runs and 74 wickets.
The forthcoming England vs New Zealand ODI series comprises four matches, slated to begin on September 8 in Cardiff. The series will be followed by a clash against Ireland in three ODIs. As the countdown to the 2023 World Cup opener against New Zealand on October 5 in Ahmedabad unfolds, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the resurgence of Ben Stokes on the global stage.
