The first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka marks the beginning of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both teams. Sri Lanka, the home side, currently holds the upper hand, having posted a respectable score of 312 runs in their first innings. Unfortunately for Pakistan, their captain, Babar Azam, did not have a great start to the match, getting out cheaply.
Batting at number four, Babar Azam showed promise early on, hitting a boundary and playing an impressive backfoot punch off Prabath Jayasuriya that raced to the boundary. However, in the same over, Jayasuriya redeemed himself by delivering a seemingly harmless ball. It was a length ball sliding on middle from round the wicket, and Babar Azam played tentatively, unsure about the turn. The ball took the inside-edge of his bat, resulting in a simple catch for the wicketkeeper.
Although Babar looked in good touch during his brief innings, he couldn't convert it into a substantial score. His low score in the first innings means he also missed an opportunity to climb up in the ICC Test rankings. Currently ranked third, he is only 21 rating points behind the top-ranked Test batter, Kane Williamson. However, this failure will likely result in him losing a few rating points. Babar Azam will have another chance in the second innings to make amends, and fans are eager to see if he can deliver a big innings.
