Mohammad Hafeez Front-Runner To Become Pakistan’s Chief Selector

Former Pakistan cricket captain and all-rounder, Mohammad Hafeez, is a leading contender for the role of chief selector for the national team. The position has been vacant since the dissolution of the previous Cricket Management Committee (CMC) in June.

Sources indicate that the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board's CMC, Zaka Ashraf, favors Hafeez for the chief selector position. He held discussions with both former captain Rashid Latif and Hafeez regarding the role. While Rashid Latif expressed more interest in working on anti-corruption matters, Hafeez expressed his willingness to take up the challenge of becoming the chief selector.

Haroon Rasheed, who was a member of the previous CMC, was appointed as the chairperson of the national selection committee, along with team director Mickey Arthur and head coach Grant Bradburn. However, with the dissolution of the previous CMC, Haroon Rasheed's position as chairperson has become uncertain.

Zaka Ashraf is yet to decide whether to overhaul the entire selection committee, which was formed in consultation with Mickey Arthur, or simply appoint a new chief selector to replace Haroon Rasheed. Given the busy schedule of the Pakistan team, with an ODI series against Afghanistan confirmed in Sri Lanka in August, it is unlikely that the entire selection committee will be changed.

In addition to the chief selector position, Ashraf is contemplating other changes within the Pakistan team. He plans to bring in new individuals for the roles of team manager and media manager for the Asia Cup and the World Cup India. Naveed Akram Cheema, who has previously served as manager, is being considered as a strong candidate for the team manager position, replacing Rehan ul Haq.

The new CMC, with a mandate of four months, is responsible for conducting fresh elections for all affiliated regional associations, reviving departmental teams, and forming a new board of governors who will then elect a new chairman. Furthermore, the committee has already begun implementing changes in the board's corporate structure.

As Mohammad Hafeez emerges as a potential chief selector candidate, Pakistani cricket enthusiasts are keenly observing the developments within the national team's management, hoping for the best outcomes in the upcoming tournaments and matches.
