The ongoing five-match T20 series between India and Australia has seen Virat Kohli struggle to find form. Following his modest performance in the third match, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar advised Kohli to emulate Sachin Tendulkar's iconic 241-run innings in Sydney. However, Virat Kohli’s childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, did not take this suggestion lightly and offered a sharp response.
Gavaskar’s Advice and Rajkumar’s Reaction
Sunil Gavaskar, regarded as one of the greatest Indian cricketers, suggested that Kohli should focus on building innings patiently, just as Sachin did during his legendary knock in Sydney. However, Rajkumar Sharma, a former off-spinner and Kohli’s childhood mentor, voiced his disagreement.
Speaking to PTI on Tuesday, Rajkumar said:
"Sunil Gavaskar has been a great player, and his suggestions are always welcome, but I hope he also gives advice to other players about their batting."
Rajkumar Defends Kohli
Rajkumar further pointed out Kohli’s recent century in the series, emphasizing that judging his form based on two innings is unfair. He said:
"He has been performing consistently since 2008. Criticizing him after a couple of innings is not fair. He has already scored a century in this series. How many players have managed to score a century?"
Kohli’s Recent Stats: A Rough Patch?
The 2024-25 season, starting from the Bangladesh series, has indeed been tough for Kohli. His first-innings average stands at a low 9.125, with only 73 runs from eight innings. His scores include 6, 47, 0, 1, 4, 5, 7, and 3 (Brisbane first innings).
Despite these numbers, Rajkumar stood firmly in Kohli’s defense, stating:
"Honestly, I am not too concerned about the stats. Given the kind of player Virat is, he will make a strong comeback. He has been the most consistent performer in Indian cricket history and does not need to respond to critics."
