Samson over Kishan likely for Bangladesh T20Is

Sanju Samson could potentially edge out Ishan Kishan for a spot in India's T20I squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh. Both wicketkeeper-batters impressed in the recent Duleep Trophy, with Samson scoring 196 runs compared to Kishan’s 123. While Kishan has shown promise, Samson’s strong form in domestic cricket may give him the upper hand despite his recent struggles in international T20s, where he recorded two ducks against Sri Lanka in July.

Recent Performances:

In the Duleep Trophy, Samson played for India D and Kishan for India C. Though both scored centuries, Samson's overall performance was more impressive, adding to his chances of securing a spot in the squad. Meanwhile, Kishan, who was once on the verge of cementing his place in the Indian white-ball setup, has returned to domestic cricket in compliance with selectors' advice, which could still influence the final decision.

Team Dynamics:

With Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal likely to be rested due to upcoming Test duties, India needs an opener for the T20I series. Samson has previously opened for India in Sri Lanka, though without much success. Given the team's current requirements, Samson might get another opportunity, particularly since Ishan Kishan has been included in the Irani Cup squad, which overlaps with the T20I series schedule.

Kishan’s Position:

Kishan was almost a permanent fixture in the Indian white-ball squad before being sidelined last year for reasons not related to his performance. His recent efforts in domestic cricket fuel speculations that he might be considered for a recall. However, with Samson not participating in the Irani Cup and Kishan already committed to it, Samson seems to have the edge for the T20I series against Bangladesh.

Other Considerations:

Selectors are expected to rest key Test players such as Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Axar Patel, Rishabh Pant, and Mohammed Siraj, opening the door for other players like Sai Sudarshan, who could be another option for the top order. Suryakumar Yadav is set to return as captain, with Hardik Pandya also part of the squad.

The three-match T20I series will start on October 6 in Gwalior, followed by games on October 9 in New Delhi and October 12 in Hyderabad.
