Mohammed Shami’s wife, Hasin Jahan, accused him of domestic violence and extramarital affairs in March 2018, filing for divorce. Additionally, following his poor performance against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021, Shami faced match-fixing allegations and significant social media trolling.
Mohammed Shami's Turbulent Times:
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after surgery. He was recently seen practicing with a test ball on the field, indicating a potential return in the upcoming test season. Amidst his recovery, his close friend Umesh Kumar made a shocking revelation about Shami’s career and personal life struggles, disclosing that Shami had attempted suicide.
Allegations and Consequences:
Shami's wife, Hasin Jahan, accused him of domestic violence and having relationships with other women, leading to her filing for divorce in March 2018. In addition, following a poor performance against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021, Shami faced accusations of match-fixing and was heavily trolled on social media. Troubled by these events, the fast bowler attempted suicide. However, he made a strong comeback, winning back his fans with record-breaking performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Umesh Kumar’s Revelations:
Recently, Shami's friend Umesh Kumar appeared on Shubhankar Mishra's podcast 'Unplugged' and discussed the tough times Shami went through. Kumar stated, "During that period, Shami was fighting everything. He stayed with me at my house. But when the match-fixing allegations against Pakistan surfaced and investigations took place that night, he was shattered.
He said, 'I can tolerate anything, but not accusations of betraying my country.'"
The Suicide Attempt:
Umesh Kumar, a member of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, further revealed that Shami had attempted suicide.
He said, "It was reported that he wanted to do something drastic that night (suicide). Around 4 AM, I got up to drink water. As I was heading towards the kitchen, I saw him standing on the balcony. We were living on the 19th floor. I understood what had happened. I think that night was the longest of Shami's career. Later, one day while we were talking, he received a message on his phone saying he had been cleared by the investigating committee. Maybe he was happier that day than he would have been winning the World Cup."
