To promote the popularity of cricket, the ICC decided to host the T20 World Cup 2024 in America. All group stage matches of the current tournament were played in the United States. The marquee clash between India and Pakistan took place at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium. Now, the US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, has expressed his delight over the growing popularity of cricket.
USA Defeated Pakistan in a Super Over
The co-host of the World Cup, America, defeated former champions Pakistan in a super over during the Group A league match on June 6. Following this, the Babar Azam-led Pakistani team failed to make it to the Super Eight and was eliminated in the first round. Garcetti told PTI, "Cricket is like a religion, as we often say in India. I think it's a fantastic game whose popularity is now growing in America."
USA Team Reached Super-8
Although the American team did not qualify for the semifinals, they made it to the Super-8 under the leadership of Monank Patel. Garcetti said he has now become a cricket fan. He stated, "I have become a cricket enthusiast, as everyone knows. I love cricket very much. I believe that more and more Americans are learning to love the game we used to play 150 years ago."
Garcetti Expressed Happiness
Garcetti described America's entry into the Super Eight as a historic moment. He said,
"I can't believe we defeated Pakistan. We also defeated Bangladesh before the World Cup started, and we came close to beating India. I say 'close' because, as the US Ambassador to India, it's an excellent result."
