IPL 2024: England Players Unavailable for Playoff and Final Matches, ECB Explains Why

ECB

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that players from England's team will not be available for the knockout matches. England recently revealed a 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, which includes some players participating in the IPL.

Players representing England in the IPL 2024 won't be able to represent their teams in the current season's playoffs and finals. Despite playing for their IPL franchises against England, the ECB has declared that these players won't be available for the knockout games. England has unveiled a 15-player squad for the T20 World Cup, incorporating some IPL participants.

England has summoned all players back from the T20 series against Pakistan, scheduled to commence on May 22, ahead of the World Cup. This series holds significant importance for both teams' World Cup preparations. Consequently, players like Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, and Moeen Ali will have to return. Buttler plays for Rajasthan Royals, Salt for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Moeen for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. Given that all three teams - KKR, Rajasthan, and CSK - are advancing in the playoffs, the absence of these players might pose a challenge for their respective teams.

Rob, the director of England's men's team, has conversed with the selected players for the T20 World Cup, informing them about their selection and their unavailability for the knockout stage. The IPL 2024 playoffs are scheduled from May 21 to May 26. Apart from Buttler, Salt, and Moeen, England's World Cup squad comprises Johnny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Will Jacks, and Reece Topley, who are also participating in the IPL.

Media reports suggest that all England players will return home by May 18-19, rendering them unavailable for the playoffs. The IPL group stage will conclude by May 19. Following Tuesday's team announcement, Rob emphasized, "You can't call back players without any reason. This is also for the safety of the players." Buttler had already decided to return home before the IPL concluded. I had informed him that he would need to play as captain in the series against Pakistan, to which he expressed his desire to return and prepare for the T20 World Cup.
