With Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian team ending after the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, the BCCI has invited applications for the position, with the deadline set for May 27. Among the many names being speculated for the role, South African former cricketer AB de Villiers has also shared his thoughts.
Coaching Frontrunners
In recent discussions, several high-profile names have been linked to the Indian team’s coaching job. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming were mentioned as potential candidates. However, Ponting confirmed that he was offered the position but declined, and former Australian head coach Justin Langer and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) coach Andy Flower also removed themselves from consideration.
De Villiers’ Perspective
When asked about his interest in the coaching role, de Villiers responded, "I have no idea about it. I think I would enjoy coaching. There are some aspects of it that I don’t like and need to learn, but everything is possible with time. Coaching has elements that I would enjoy, and things I’ve been learning for a long time."
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated that the board is looking for a long-term coach. Traditionally, India has not employed different coaches for different formats.
De Villiers’ Future Prospects
Although de Villiers will not be coaching this season, he has not ruled out the possibility in the future. "I would like to work with some teams and players. Full-time coaching is not something I am considering right now, but I’ve always said never say never, so things might change in the future," de Villiers remarked.
This leaves the possibility open for de Villiers to step into a coaching role at some point, but for now, he remains focused on other commitments.
The BCCI's search for a new head coach continues, with many in the cricketing world eagerly watching to see who will take up the mantle after Dravid’s departure.
