Hardik Pandya, the dynamic Indian all-rounder, faced a challenging ordeal during the 2023 World Cup that tested his resilience and determination. In a recent interaction with Star Sports, Pandya shared the painful details of his injury and the subsequent struggles to make a comeback to competitive cricket.

The injury occurred during India's match against Bangladesh in the World Cup when Pandya attempted to stop a straight drive from Litton Das off his own bowling. This effort led to an ankle injury, forcing him to leave the field immediately. Initially, the assessment suggested a recovery period of 25 days, but Pandya was determined to return before the World Cup concluded.

"I don't start preparations for a tournament 2-3 months before. The preparation for the World Cup began a year ago. I planned my routines. This was a freak injury. Very few people know that my injury was extended because when I got injured, it was meant to be for 25 days only. But I pushed. I was like, 'I had come back'. When I left the team, I told them, 'main 5 din me vaapis aa raha hu' (I will come back in five days)," revealed Pandya.

Despite the initial prognosis, Pandya's determination led him to push his body beyond its limits. He underwent injections in his ankles at three different places and had to remove blood from his ankle due to swelling. The all-rounder's relentless pursuit to return to the field showcased his commitment to the game and his desire to represent his country.

However, Pandya's injury woes persisted, leading to him missing subsequent series and matches, including the T20I series against Australia, the white-ball leg in South Africa, and India's last T20I outing against Afghanistan. The disappointment of missing out on playing in the World Cup at home weighed heavily on his heart.

"When I was pushing, I had a recurrence where my injury extended to three months. I wasn't able to walk, but I was even trying to run. I was on painkillers, I was trying to make a comeback. The biggest pride for me is to play for the country, and the World Cup at home was my baby. I missed out on that, and it is something that is going to be heavy on the heart," said Pandya.

Despite these challenges, Pandya's determination and passion for the game remained unwavering. He made a much-anticipated return to competitive cricket as he captained the Mumbai Indians in the 2024 Indian Premier League, marking a significant milestone in his recovery journey.

Pandya's comeback not only inspires fans but also serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication required to overcome adversity in sports. His journey reflects the true spirit of cricket, where setbacks are met with determination and setbacks are seen as stepping stones to greater success.
