In the second Test match between India and England in Visakhapatnam, Ravichandran Ashwin created history by becoming the Indian bowler with the most wickets against England. Ashwin's remarkable performance in the match allowed him to surpass the previous record held by legendary Indian spinner Bhagwat Chandrasekhar for 45 years.
Ashwin, with his stellar bowling, claimed four wickets in the Visakhapatnam Test, bringing his total wickets against England to 97 in 21 Test matches. This achievement propelled him ahead of Chandrasekhar, who had taken 95 wickets in 23 Test matches against England from 1964 to 1979.
Breaking a 45-year-old record, Ashwin dismissed England's Ben Duckett to reach this milestone. Moreover, Ashwin is now just three wickets away from reaching the milestone of 100 wickets against the English team.
The Test match in Visakhapatnam also marked the first instance in Test history where both teams were bowled out for over 250 runs in both innings. India won the match by 106 runs, leveling the five-match Test series at 1-1.
Looking ahead, Ashwin has the opportunity to achieve another significant milestone in his career as he is on the verge of reaching 500 Test wickets. With 499 wickets in 97 Test matches, he will be eagerly awaiting the third Test against England scheduled to begin in Rajkot on February 15, 2024.
This historic feat by Ashwin adds another chapter to his illustrious career and underscores his importance as one of India's premier spin bowlers in Test cricket.
