Dhruv Jurel, the wicketkeeper-batsman from Uttar Pradesh, has recently earned a spot in the Indian team for the Test series against England. His journey to the national team is not just a tale of cricketing prowess but also a story of overcoming financial hurdles and parental support.
Early Struggles: From Borrowing for a Bat to International Debut
Hailing from Agra, Dhruv faced financial challenges early in his life. His father, who served in the army, had participated in the Kargil War and retired when Dhruv was just 10 years old. During his school days at the Army School in Agra, Dhruv developed a passion for cricket, which clashed with his father's aspiration for him to pursue a career in the army.
Initially, Dhruv had to resort to fabricating stories to his father about attending only swimming lessons while, in reality, he was also engaging in cricket coaching. When his father discovered this, he was initially upset, but Dhruv's exceptional skills on the cricket field eventually won him over.
When Dhruv needed a cricket bat, his father borrowed ₹800 from friends to purchase it. Despite financial difficulties, Dhruv's determination to pursue cricket prevailed.
From Swimming to Cricket: A Challenging Path to Pursue His Passion
Dhruv's father wanted him to prepare for a government job, but Dhruv had set his sights on cricket. The financial strain on the family made the situation more challenging. In an interview, Dhruv mentioned, "I told my father that the kit would cost around ₹8,000, and when he heard the price, he was shocked and asked me to quit cricket." However, Dhruv's mother, recognizing his passion, sold her gold chain to buy him the cricket kit.
Initially, his father was reluctant, wishing for Dhruv to focus on preparing for a secure government job. However, witnessing Dhruv's dedication and talent in cricket, his father gradually started supporting his aspirations.
Cricketing Rise and Achievements
Dhruv quickly rose through the ranks, representing Uttar Pradesh in Under-14 and Under-16 categories. In 2020, he was selected for the Indian Under-19 team for the World Cup, eventually captaining the side to victory in the Under-19 Asia Cup.
His versatility as a wicketkeeper-batsman came to the forefront, with his cricketing skills earning him a place in the Rajasthan Royals squad for IPL 2023 and later playing for the team in IPL 2024.
National Call-up and International Debut
Dhruv's exceptional performances in first-class cricket paved the way for his selection in the Indian A team. He recently participated in the South Africa tour with the India-A team, showcasing his skills with both bat and gloves.
Despite facing tough competition, Dhruv earned a spot in the Indian Test team for the series against England. Although he might not be the first-choice wicketkeeper initially, his presence in the senior dressing room at the age of 22 is a significant achievement.
