Hardik Pandya to Miss New Zealand Match, Set to Return Against England

File

In a significant development, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya won't be part of the Indian team for their match against New Zealand on October 22 in Dharamshala. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an update regarding his absence. During India's match against Bangladesh, Hardik sustained an injury to his left thigh while fielding his own delivery. After this incident, he could only bowl three deliveries against Bangladesh and subsequently was unable to participate in the entire match. As a result, he has been advised to rest and recover.

Hardik's injury prompted a trip to Bangalore for medical assessment, and he has received medical advice to take it easy. The BCCI's medical team will closely monitor his progress. Instead of flying with the team to Dharamshala on October 20, he will join the squad directly in Lucknow, where India is set to play England on October 29.

Notably, Hardik's absence for the New Zealand match may lead to strategic changes in the team's composition. Considering the fast-paced nature of the Dharamshala pitch, there's a possibility that Mohammed Shami, a quick bowler, may be included in the lineup. In addition, a specialist batter like Suryakumar Yadav may replace Hardik Pandya. This combination would see the Indian team field six specialist batsmen in Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar. Additionally, Ravindra Jadeja, as an all-rounder, would be part of the squad, along with fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, and spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

The medical evaluation in England will shed more light on the extent of Hardik's injury and when he might return to the playing XI. The team management will have to contemplate his replacement and assess the team combination for upcoming matches.

Hardik Pandya's Performance in the World Cup -

Hardik Pandya's performance in the 2023 World Cup has been noteworthy. In the four matches he has played so far, he has taken five wickets, with an economy rate of 6.84. His best performance came against Bangladesh when he bowled two overs, giving away just 34 runs and taking two crucial wickets. In batting, he had only one opportunity against Australia, where he managed to score 11 runs. Hardik Pandya has a remarkable record in ODIs, with 84 wickets in 86 matches and 1,769 runs, including an impressive half-century.

Before Hardik Pandya's absence, another injury setback was experienced by the Indian team when spinner Akshar Patel was ruled out of the World Cup due to an injury sustained during the Asia Cup. Ravi Ashwin was included in the squad as his replacement. Ashwin has played just one match in the World Cup so far, against Australia.

The team management faces a challenging task in managing their combination for the upcoming matches, considering these injuries and the dynamic nature of the World Cup. They must carefully strategize to ensure India's continued success in the tournament.
