Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has weighed in on this decision, expressing his thoughts on the selection process. Yuvraj believes that there are several talented players in the Indian team, and he suggests that the team could have considered leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal or the versatile Washington Sundar to fill Axar Patel's role.
Yuvraj Singh stated, "The Indian team lacks a wrist-spinner alongside Chahal. If we were not opting for Chahal, I was eager to see Sundar in the team. However, the team seemed to prefer an experienced spinner, which led to Ashwin's inclusion."
Yuvraj also shared his thoughts on Jasprit Bumrah, comparing him to the impact that Zaheer Khan had for India in the 2011 World Cup.
