Reserve Day Dilemma: India's Consecutive Matches Raise Concerns Ahead of World Cup

Credit : ICC

The cricket match between India and Pakistan in the Super Four stage is now scheduled to be played on the reserve day, which is today. Due to rain on Sunday, the game couldn't continue after 24.1 overs into the first innings. Now, India and Pakistan will have to play on Monday. According to the reserve day's playing conditions, if there is no rain on Monday, the full 50-overs match will be played. This has put Team India in a difficult situation.

In fact, after playing against Pakistan on Monday, India is also scheduled to play against Sri Lanka on September 12th, which will also be a 50-overs match. This means that Team India will be in action for three consecutive days, which could be a cause of concern for Indian players just before the upcoming World Cup.

The World Cup is scheduled to be played from October 5th. Before that, the Asia Cup is seen as a preparation for it. However, this tournament seems to be more of an injury risk for Indian players than a preparation. The Indian team has already been announced for the World Cup, and it includes the same players who have been selected for this Asia Cup, except for the notable exclusions of Krishnappa Gowtham and Tilak Varma.

The impact of the reserve day on workload:

The decision by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to schedule a reserve day for the India-Pakistan match has raised questions. While the popularity of the India-Pakistan match led to high expectations from fans, during the group stage of the Asia Cup, the match between the two teams was affected by rain. In this context, ACC, under the leadership of Jay Shah, decided to announce a reserve day for the Super Four match between India and Pakistan.

However, the reserve day was only kept for this specific match in the Super Four stage, while all the other matches were scheduled on the designated days. This decision by ACC has faced criticism, with several former cricketers questioning the need for a reserve day for just one match. The decision, however, was upheld.

No gap between India's two matches:

On September 10th, the India-Pakistan Super Four match couldn't be completed due to rain. As a result, the reserve day will be used, but this can be detrimental to the Indian players. While most other teams in the tournament have a decent gap between their matches, India will have to play two matches back-to-back. This raises the question of why ACC didn't provide a sufficient gap between India's two matches if they deemed a reserve day necessary.

Questions on ACC's decision:

While on one hand, concerns are raised about the workload on key players, captain Rohit Sharma pointing towards workload management, on the other hand, the consecutive matches within a short period can also raise concerns about player fatigue. Despite the risk of taking such a decision just before the World Cup, questions are being raised about the ACC and BCCI's decision-making. The players in India's World Cup squad are the top players in the country at the moment. Given this, the continuous cricketing action could prove to be detrimental.

Will some players rest against Sri Lanka?

If the India-Pakistan match on September 11th is a 50-over game, it remains to be seen if some players will be given rest against Sri Lanka. India will have to bowl in the second innings against Pakistan, and if they bat first in the match against Sri Lanka, it could also be risky. Jasprit Bumrah recently returned from injury, and there's a risk of fatigue and being unfit for players like Siraj and Shardul. The decision by ACC to schedule a reserve day has put Team India in a challenging position, and all eyes are on how this might affect their performance in the upcoming World Cup.

The decision to schedule a reserve day for the India-Pakistan match in the Asia Cup has sparked criticism due to several major concerns -

it puts excessive workload on Indian players as they are set to play three consecutive days, raising questions about player fatigue and injury risk just before the World Cup. Secondly, the reserve day was allocated for only one match, leading to doubts about the fairness of this decision. Lastly, the lack of a sufficient gap between India's two matches has further raised concerns about team management and player well-being. This decision has put Team India in a challenging position ahead of the World Cup.
