The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially revealed the list of umpires who will officiate the first matches of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Nitin Menon and Kumar Dharmasena will be the umpires for the opening match of the World Cup, which will be contested between England and New Zealand on October 5th. Former Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath will serve as the match referee for this crucial encounter.
The tournament opener will take place in Ahmedabad, India, and will kick off what promises to be an exciting and competitive World Cup. In addition to Nitin Menon and Kumar Dharmasena, the TV umpire and fourth umpire for this match will be Paul Wilson and Saikat Chaudhary, respectively.
In the 13th edition of the World Cup, a total of 16 umpires will be responsible for officiating the matches. This lineup includes all 12 members of the ICC's Emirates Elite Panel of Umpires, along with four members of the ICC's Emerging Umpire Panel.
Notably, the list of umpires for this year's World Cup features three out of the four umpires appointed for the 2019 World Cup final at Lord's: Kumar Dharmasena, Marais Erasmus, and Rod Tucker. Alim Dar, the fourth umpire from the 2019 final, is notably absent from this year's lineup, as he resigned from the Elite Panel earlier this year.
Aside from the umpires, the ICC has also appointed match referees for the World Cup. Serving as match referees for the 2023 ODI World Cup are Jeff Crowe, Andy Pycroft, Richie Richardson, and Javagal Srinath.
ICC General Manager - Cricket, Geoff Allardice, commented on the appointments, saying, "For a tournament of this magnitude, you need individuals who are at the top of their game at all levels. The ICC's Elite Panel of Umpires, along with the emerging group, will bring unparalleled skill, experience, and global standards to this World Cup. We are pleased with the team we have put together for this tournament."
