In the Super 4 round of the Asia Cup on Tuesday, India faced off against Sri Lanka, and it was the young Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage who stole the show. Indian batsmen, including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya, all fell victim to Wellalage's brilliant bowling performance.

Wellalage, just 20 years old, took five wickets in the match, causing major trouble for India's top-order batsmen. He achieved this remarkable feat in only 10 overs, conceding 40 runs. Wellalage secured his first-ever five-wicket haul in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during this match, where he dismissed several renowned Indian players.

Wellalage made his ODI debut against Australia in June of the previous year. This match against India marked his 13th ODI appearance, and he has now taken a total of 18 wickets in these matches. Notably, he has also played one Test match for Sri Lanka but is yet to claim a wicket in the longest format of the game.

Wellalage's bowling performance brought back memories of Ajantha Mendis, a former Sri Lankan spin bowler. Mendis had also made a significant impact early in his career against India. He had taken more than five wickets in a match during the Asia Cup. In 2008, in a match held in Karachi during the Asia Cup, Mendis wreaked havoc by taking six wickets while conceding just 13 runs. He dismissed renowned Indian batsmen like Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan, and RP Singh. India lost that match by a margin of 100 runs. Wellalage's performance against India served as a reminder of Mendis's early success against top-notch Indian players.
