He dismissed renowned Indian batsmen like Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan, and RP Singh. India lost that match by a margin of 100 runs. Wellalage's performance against India served as a reminder of Mendis's early success against top-notch Indian players.
