Asia Cup 2023: The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has decided to conduct the Asia Cup Super-4 and the final match in Colombo due to improved weather conditions in the Sri Lankan capital. There were earlier speculations about shifting the Super-4 and final matches from Colombo to Hambantota due to heavy rain in Colombo. ACC has confirmed the decision to hold the matches in Colombo after consultations with Sri Lanka, the host Pakistan Cricket Board, and official broadcasters. The rain had affected matches in Colombo, including those involving India, causing disruptions in the tournament schedule. There was also a proposal to keep a reserve day for the India-Pakistan match due to the rain interruptions, but no official statement from ACC has been made regarding this.
Before this decision, ICC President Roger Binny and Vice-President Rajiv Shukla had arrived in Lahore for a two-day visit. They had met with Jaka Ashraf, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. The tournament is being played on a hybrid model, with Pakistan hosting four matches and Sri Lanka hosting the final along with eight other matches. The India-Pakistan group match had been canceled due to rain, and there was a proposal to shift the Super-4 match to Hambantota. However, ACC has now confirmed that the matches will continue in Colombo.
India had secured their place in the Super-4 stage by defeating Nepal on Monday. Nepal had scored 230 runs in their innings, with Asif Sheikh scoring 58 and Sompal Kami contributing 48 runs. Mohammad Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each for India. After rain disrupted the Indian innings, India was given a target of 145 runs in 23 overs under the DLS method. India achieved the target without losing a wicket in 20.1 overs. Captain Rohit Sharma scored 74 runs off 59 balls, and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten with 67 runs off 62 balls.
The India-Pakistan match is scheduled for September 10th, and Pakistan has reached the Super-4 stage from Group E, while India finished second in Group F. Nepal was the first team to be eliminated from the Asia Cup. In Group B, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualified for the Super-4 stage. India will play against Pakistan on September 10th, followed by matches against Sri Lanka on September 12th and Bangladesh on September 15th in the Super-4 stage. The top two teams from the Super-4 stage will qualify for the final, which will be played on September 17th.
