Yashasvi Jaiswal produced a remarkable century on the second day of the Test match against West Indies in Dominica, becoming the 17th Indian player to achieve a hundred on Test debut. Jaiswal, who resumed his innings on 40 not out, displayed a balanced and positive approach at the crease. After the lunch break, the 21-year-old accelerated his scoring and reached a well-deserved hundred.
As the 17th Indian Test debutant to score a century, Jaiswal follows in the footsteps of Shreyas Iyer, who accomplished the feat in 2021 against New Zealand in Kanpur. It is worth noting that his batting partner, Rohit Sharma, also registered a Test hundred on debut against West Indies back in 2013.
Jaiswal's achievement is particularly noteworthy as he is only the seventh Indian batsman to score a century on Test debut away from home, a feat that had not been accomplished in 13 years since Suresh Raina's 120 against Sri Lanka in 2010. Furthermore, he is only the third Indian opener to achieve this milestone, joining Shikhar Dhawan (187 against Australia in 2013) and Prithvi Shaw (134 against West Indies in 2018).
Speaking to reporters at the end of Day 2, Jaiswal expressed his joy, stating, "It feels really good. It was an emotional moment [reaching 100]. My batting is still ongoing, so the effort will be to play as long as possible for the team." He also dedicated his achievement to his parents, acknowledging their significant influence on his life.
Despite having played only 15 first-class games prior to this Test, Jaiswal boasts an average of over 80 with nine centuries, including an impressive 265 in the second innings of the Duleep Trophy Final last year. He completed his hundred on Test debut in the 70th over of the innings, with the opening partnership with Rohit crossing the 200-run mark.

Suresh Raina 120 v SL, 2010
Virender Sehwag 105 v SA, 2001
Sourav Ganguly 131 v ENG, 1996
Pravin Amre 103 v SA, 1992

Rohit, who joined Jaiswal before the tea break, reached his tenth Test century and surpassed 3500 Test runs during his innings. However, he fell on the next ball, gloving a catch down the leg side to Joshua Da Silva, off the bowling of debutant Alick Athanaze.
The opening partnership between Rohit and Jaiswal accumulated 229 runs, making it the second-highest for India in Tests in the West Indies. The record of 237 runs for the second wicket in West Indies Tests is held by Vijay Manjrekar and Pankaj Roy, achieved at Sabina Park in 1953.
Jaiswal credited Rohit for providing guidance during their partnership, stating, "I spoke a lot to Rohit while batting. He kept explaining to me how to bat on this wicket and where the runs would come. We had very good communication between us." He expressed gratitude for the experienced players and legends of the team, including Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane, for their support and mentorship.
Jaiswal concluded by highlighting the learning experience and the difference it makes when senior players offer advice, stating, "It makes a lot of difference when experienced players and legends of our team sit with you, talk to you... It makes a big difference because I keep learning from them."
