Sunil Gavaskar Disappointed With Rohit Sharma’s Performance As Indian Captain

Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary cricketer, has expressed his disappointment with Rohit Sharma's tenure as captain of the Indian cricket team, stating that he expected more from the 36-year-old opener. Gavaskar has also called for greater accountability from the coaching staff.

Rohit took over as captain in February last year after Virat Kohli stepped down. While India has achieved positive results in bilateral home series, they have faced challenges in major tournaments. They failed to reach the T20 World Cup final in Australia and lost the World Test Championship final last month.

"I expected more from him (Rohit). In India, it's different, but performing well overseas is the real test. That's where he has been a little disappointing. Even in the T20 format, despite his experience in the IPL and leading top players, not being able to reach the finals has been disappointing," Gavaskar expressed to The Indian Express.

Gavaskar also expressed his desire to see the team management conduct a thorough review of India's losses. Specifically addressing India's defeat to Australia in the WTC final, he emphasized the need for coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit to be held accountable for the decisions made during the match.

"They should be asking questions like, 'Why did you choose to field first?' Even though it was explained at the toss that it was overcast. The follow-up question should have been, 'Didn't you know about Travis Head's weakness against the short ball?' Why was the bouncer employed only after he had scored 80 runs? Everyone knew about it, even Ricky Ponting in the commentary box was saying, 'Bounce him, bounce him.' We all knew, but we didn't try," Gavaskar stated.

The Indian cricket team is set to begin their 2023-2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a two-match Test series against West Indies, commencing on July 12. The series will be followed by three ODIs and five T20Is.
