Gautam Gambhir Criticizes English Fans for Misbehaving, Australia Takes 2-0 Lead in Ashes -
Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir expressed his disappointment with English fans, whom he referred to as "sledgers," for mistreating and abusing the Australian team during the fifth day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's Stadium in London. The incident occurred during the lunch break when Australian players were confronted by members in the Long Room following Jonny Bairstow's controversial dismissal. Fans worldwide have condemned the behavior of the English supporters.
Taking to his official Twitter handle, Gambhir called out the English fans, asking whether the notion of the "spirit of the game" applies to them or if it is solely reserved for Indians. This tweet served as a reminder that English players and fans have previously criticized Indian players, particularly Ravi Ashwin and Deepti Sharma, for allegedly lacking the "spirit of the game" in incidents involving 'Mankad' dismissals. Gambhir's tweet aimed to show the English fans a taste of their own medicine.
Australia Takes 2-0 Lead Over England -
Despite a heroic and magnificent innings of 155 by captain Ben Stokes, England fell short of avoiding a 43-run defeat to Australia on the thrilling fifth and final day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's. Resuming the day at 114/4, Stokes and Ben Duckett (83) added 63 runs before Stokes was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood just after the first hour of the morning session.
As Stokes unleashed his attacking onslaught, Australia, reminiscing about the Headingley Test of 2019, began to feel a sense of déjà vu at Lord's in 2023. However, once Stokes fell to Hazlewood, breaking his 108-run partnership with Stuart Broad, Australia managed to bowl out England for 327 in 81.3 overs, securing a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
England's defeat can be attributed to allowing Australia to amass too many runs in the first innings after opting to bowl first. Additionally, England's aggressive approach to the short ball led to the loss of crucial wickets in their first innings, giving the visitors a significant 91-run lead.
To retain the Ashes, England must win the third Test at Headingley, starting on Thursday. Failure to do so would make it impossible for them to reclaim the prestigious trophy.
