Siraj - File |
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that fast bowler Mohammed Siraj will miss the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies due to a sore ankle. The 29-year-old seamer has been advised rest as a precautionary measure by the BCCI medical team.
Siraj was a vital part of the Indian squad during the Test series against the West Indies, where he impressed with his exceptional bowling skills, claiming a total of seven wickets. Notably, he achieved a personal best in the second match, taking five wickets.
The pacer has been actively participating in cricket events throughout the year. He featured in all the ODIs for India against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia. Additionally, he played a significant role in India's triumph in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Tests). Moreover, his impressive performance in the IPL 2023 for Royal Challengers Bangalore, securing 19 wickets in 14 matches, made him stand out as the highest wicket-taker for the team.
Before the ODI series against the West Indies, Siraj also played a crucial role in the World Test Championship final at The Oval against Australia, where he claimed five wickets. Subsequently, in the Test series against the West Indies, he continued his remarkable form, taking seven wickets in the two Tests, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the second Test.
Siraj was expected to lead India's pace attack, with Umran Malik supporting him. However, with his absence, Shardul Thakur now becomes the most experienced seamer in India's squad, having claimed 50 wickets in 35 matches.
The updated Indian ODI squad includes Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Umran Malik, and Mukesh Kumar.
The three-match ODI series against the West Indies is scheduled to commence on July 27, 2023, in Barbados. Despite Siraj's absence, the Indian team will be determined to put up a strong performance and continue their winning streak in the format.
