In preparation for the first Test against West Indies, scheduled to begin on July 12 at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica, Ishan Kishan and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been handed their maiden Test caps.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian team, announced Jaiswal's debut and expressed his hope that the left-handed batsman would perform well and secure his place in the team. Jaiswal boasts an impressive first-class average in the 80s, along with nine centuries to his name. He also topped the run charts in the IPL 2023.
Kishan has been given the opportunity in the playing XI ahead of KS Bharat, who last featured in the World Test Championship Final against Australia. Rohit mentioned in his pre-match press conference that Shubman Gill would bat at No. 3, as Gill expressed his preference for that position. This decision provides a left-right opening combination, which has been a requirement for the team.
India aims to start the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle on a positive note, having reached the final on both previous occasions but falling short against New Zealand and Australia. Furthermore, India has maintained an unbeaten record against West Indies in Tests for the past 21 years.
