Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has come under heavy scrutiny after her outburst against the umpires during the third ODI against Bangladesh. Her actions, including hitting the stumps with her bat in anger over a decision and making derogatory comments during the post-match presentation, have sparked controversy.
As a result, Harmanpreet is likely to face sanctions, including a hefty fine and demerit points. Her behavior has been criticized as irresponsible and disrespectful towards the umpires, with many condemning her remarks about the umpiring as 'pathetic'.
Even Bangladesh counterpart Nigar Sultan Joty expressed disappointment at Harmanpreet's conduct, urging her to show more manners in her interactions.
Former India cricketers have also voiced their disapproval, with Madan Lal, a 1983 World Cup winner, taking to Twitter to call for strict action from the BCCI. He emphasized that Harmanpreet is not bigger than the game and that her behavior has brought a bad name to Indian cricket.
In contrast, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana showed support for Harmanpreet but acknowledged that the level of umpiring needs improvement. She suggested that issues could have been addressed in a more refined manner.
The tour proved disappointing for India as they couldn't secure a victory in the ODI series and only managed a narrow win in the T20Is, barely surviving a scare in the second game where they were bowled out for just 95 runs. The final ODI, which ended in a tie, resulted in the series ending in a stalemate.
As the cricketing community reacts to Harmanpreet's behavior, it remains to be seen how the BCCI will address the situation and impose disciplinary action.
