Indian women’s team captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, faced serious consequences for her actions during the third ODI against Bangladesh. Following two breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct, she has been suspended for the next two international matches.
The first incident occurred during India's chase when Kaur, unhappy with an lbw decision, hit the stumps with her bat and had a heated argument with the umpire. Later, she openly criticized the umpiring as 'pathetic' during the post-match presentation and gestured towards the match officials, suggesting bias.
Sanctions imposed by ICC
For the Level 2 offense of showing dissent at an umpire's decision, Kaur was fined 50% of her match fee and received three demerit points. Additionally, she was fined 25% of her match fee for a Level 1 offense relating to public criticism of an incident in the international match.
As per ICC regulations, a Level 2 breach usually leads to a fine ranging from 50 to 100% of the match fee and three or four demerit points. A Level 1 breach results in an official reprimand or a maximum penalty of 50% of the match fee and one or two demerit points.
Due to the accumulation of four demerit points, Kaur received two suspension points, leading to her suspension from either one Test match or two ODIs or two T20Is, depending on the team's schedule.
