The Arun Jaitley Stadium is set to undergo a significant renovation worth Rs 20 to 25 crore in preparation for the five matches it will host during the upcoming ODI World Cup in October-November.
Earlier this year, the venue faced criticism for its lack of basic hygiene, particularly in the washrooms, during the second Test between India and Australia. In April, a gap assessment conducted by the Indian cricket board (BCCI) identified Delhi, along with Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Mohali, as venues requiring major revamping. However, Mohali did not make the cut among the ten World Cup venues announced recently.
Over the past decade, cricket's popularity in India has skyrocketed, with the BCCI earning billions from broadcast rights. Unfortunately, the fans have often been neglected, as most stadiums in India lack adequate facilities.
Rajan Manchanda, joint secretary at the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), expressed gratitude to the BCCI for awarding them five games and emphasized their commitment to improving the stadium infrastructure to enhance the fan experience during the World Cup.
"We are thankful to the BCCI for granting us these five games. Our primary focus is to upgrade the stadium facilities to create a pleasant experience for the fans, and we are fully dedicated to achieving that before the mega event," Manchanda stated.
The planned upgrades will include replacing spectator seats, renovating washrooms, conducting paintwork, and implementing changes to the ticketing software. The Arun Jaitley Stadium currently has a seating capacity of approximately 35,000, and around 10,000 seats will be replaced. Additionally, the 15-year-old turnstiles will be upgraded for entry into the venue.
Manchanda emphasized the need to provide clean washrooms and hygienic food and water at reasonable prices for the fans. The housekeeping staff will be strengthened, and all the renovation work is expected to be completed by September 15, well ahead of the World Cup.
