Martin Guptill: Reflects on Retirement, Disappointed with How Career Ended, Says "I Had More to Offer"

ICC

Former New Zealand opener Martin Guptill expressed disappointment over the manner in which his international cricket career ended. A day after announcing his retirement, Guptill shared his thoughts, stating that he still had a lot to contribute to New Zealand cricket. The 38-year-old hasn’t played for the national team since October 2022 and decided to retire officially on Wednesday.

A Remarkable Career

Guptill, who debuted in 2009, played 367 matches across formats for New Zealand. One of the most talented limited-overs players for his country, Guptill scored 7,346 runs in 198 ODIs, including 18 centuries and 39 half-centuries. In T20Is, he amassed 3,531 runs in 122 matches, featuring two centuries and 20 half-centuries.

A Memorable Debut

Guptill is the first New Zealand batter to score a century on his ODI debut. He achieved this feat in 2009 against the West Indies. Later that year, he earned a spot in the ICC ODI Team of the Year.

Iconic Performances

Guptill delivered some unforgettable performances in his career, including:

  • 2015 World Cup: A record-breaking 237* against West Indies in the quarterfinals, which remains the highest individual score in World Cup history and the first double-century by a New Zealander in ODIs.
  • Other Milestones: Unbeaten 189 against England in 2013 and 180* against South Africa in 2017.

Reflections on Retirement

Guptill said:

“I made the decision based on the circumstances. I still believe I had a lot to offer New Zealand cricket. It’s disappointing to retire this way, but life moves on. Wearing the Black Cap was the proudest moment of my life. I cherished every opportunity to play at the top order. I have no regrets—I gave my best and enjoyed every moment of the game.”

Legacy

Guptill leaves behind a legacy as one of New Zealand's most accomplished and impactful limited-overs cricketers. While his departure marks the end of an era, fans will always remember his contributions to Black Caps cricket, especially his unmatched performances in ICC tournaments.
