Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to set aside their egos and agree to the hybrid model proposed for the ICC Champions Trophy. With ongoing disputes between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and PCB, the tournament’s schedule remains uncertain.

The Stalemate Over the Hybrid Model

The ICC Champions Trophy, slated to be hosted by Pakistan, has been mired in controversy due to India's refusal to send its team to Pakistan, citing security concerns. To resolve the impasse, a hybrid model has been proposed where matches involving India could be played in neutral venues like Abu Dhabi or Dubai. However, the PCB has yet to fully endorse this model, further delaying ICC's announcement of the tournament schedule.

Harbhajan Singh’s Advice to PCB

In a recent statement, Harbhajan Singh criticized Pakistan for its reluctance and urged them to take a pragmatic approach.

"Players are ready to play in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Anyway, we rarely see India-Pakistan matches. Pakistan should set aside their ego and agree to the hybrid model. Security concerns for India are valid, and I've been saying this since 2022."

PCB’s Conditions for Hybrid Model

During the ICC’s virtual meeting on November 29, the PCB was reportedly asked to accept the hybrid model. However, the PCB has attached specific conditions to its agreement.

According to sources, the PCB has demanded that the ICC implement the hybrid model for all its tournaments until 2031, including events hosted by India. This condition complicates matters further, as the ICC would need to weigh the long-term feasibility of this demand against its immediate resolution for the Champions Trophy.

What Lies Ahead?

The ICC faces a significant challenge in mediating between the BCCI and PCB to ensure the smooth organization of the Champions Trophy. Whether the PCB’s conditions will be accepted remains uncertain, but a swift resolution is critical for the tournament’s success.
