Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir is currently leading the race for the head coach position of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir served as a mentor for the winning team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2024 season.
Amid speculations about becoming the head coach of Team India, Gautam Gambhir has made a significant statement. The former opening batsman expressed that he would love to become the coach of the Indian cricket team. Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach will conclude after the T20 World Cup 2024. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently invited applications for the position, with the last date for submission being May 27.
One Coach for All Formats
Recently, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah clarified that there would not be separate coaches for different formats. Therefore, the search is on for a single coach who will manage the Indian cricket team across all formats for the next 3.5 years.
Gambhir’s Statement
In response to a question during a conversation with young sports enthusiasts, Gambhir said that coaching the national team would be a matter of pride. He stated, "I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well, and when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that? It is not me who will help India win the World Cup; it is the 140 crore Indians who will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we start representing them, India will win the World Cup. The important thing is to be fearless."
Gambhir's Mentorship Leads KKR to Victory
Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian team batsman, is leading the race for the head coach position. Gambhir was the mentor for the victorious Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2024 season. However, he has remained silent on this matter. Neither party has commented, but it appears that the BCCI does not have many strong options. It is understood that no prominent foreign candidate has applied for the position, and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has already mentioned that they are looking for a candidate who is well-versed with the domestic structure of Indian cricket. BCCI had its eyes on VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), but the stylish former cricketer from Hyderabad seems to have no interest in taking up a full-time role.
