In the T20 World Cup 2024 match, Bangladesh, powered by Shakib Al Hasan's unbeaten 64 off 46 balls with nine fours, scored 159 runs for five wickets in 20 overs. In response, the Netherlands managed only 134 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs.
Bangladesh Innings
Bangladesh, after being put to bat first by Netherlands captain Scott Edwards, struggled initially but managed to post 159 runs for five wickets in 20 overs, thanks to Shakib's unbeaten 64 off 46 balls. Bangladesh's innings saw early setbacks with the wickets of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das, both taken by Aryan Dutt. Shanto was caught by Vikramjit Singh for one run, and Liton was caught by Sybrand Engelbrecht for one run as well.
Tanzid- Shakib's Partnership
After the early blows, Tanzid Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan steadied the innings. They added 48 runs for the third wicket before Tanzid was dismissed by van Meekeren for 35 runs off 26 balls. Tim Pringle then removed Towhid Hridoy, who scored nine runs off 15 balls. Despite these losses, Shakib continued to anchor the innings, reaching his half-century off 38 balls, his first in T20s in 20 innings, and his first in the T20 World Cup in 17 innings. His performance helped Bangladesh set a challenging target.
Netherlands' Response
Chasing 160, the Netherlands had a cautious start with Michael Levitt and Max O'Dowd adding 22 runs for the first wicket before Levitt was dismissed by Taskin Ahmed for 18 runs. Tanzim Hasan Sakib then removed O'Dowd, followed by a brief resistance from Vikramjit Singh and Sybrand Engelbrecht, who added 37 runs for the third wicket. However, Mahmudullah broke this partnership by dismissing Vikramjit for 33 runs.
Engelbrecht's Fighting Innings
Engelbrecht attempted to lead the chase, scoring 33 runs off 22 balls with three fours and a six, but was eventually dismissed by Rishad Hossain, who emerged as Bangladesh's most successful bowler with three wickets for 33 runs in four overs. Captain Scott Edwards contributed 25 runs off 23 balls, but no other Netherlands batsman could make a significant impact, leading to their eventual score of 134 for eight.
Bangladesh's Super-8 Hopes
This victory keeps Bangladesh's hopes of advancing to the Super-8 alive, having secured two wins in three matches. The Netherlands, although not eliminated, face a tough path ahead, needing to win their final group stage match to keep their hopes alive. South Africa has already qualified from Group D, while Sri Lanka's campaign has ended with two losses and one no-result from three matches, making further progression impossible.
Sri Lanka's Exit
Sri Lanka became the third team to exit the tournament, following Namibia and Oman from Group B. With only one point from three matches, Sri Lanka's remaining game won't be enough to surpass Bangladesh's four points.
