Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli faced a hefty fine for arguing with the umpire during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Kohli was fined 50% of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. KKR defeated RCB by one run in the match played at Eden Gardens on Sunday. This was RCB's seventh loss in eight matches in the IPL 2024 season.

Controversy Over Kohli's Dismissal

A controversy erupted between KKR and RCB during the match over Kohli's dismissal, and Kohli expressed dissatisfaction with the third umpire's decision. KKR had set a target of 223 runs for RCB in this match. In response, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis started aggressively for RCB, but Kohli lost his wicket on Harshith Rana's delivery in the third over. Kohli reviewed the decision, but the umpire ruled him out. Coming to bowl the third over, Harshith surprised Kohli by delivering a full-toss off-stump ball over his back. Kohli wanted to turn the ball on the leg side, but he first changed the direction of the bat, taking the ball to the inside edge and straight into Harshith's hands. Kohli immediately took the Decision Review System (DRS). Kohli believed that the ball hit above the waist and should have been declared a no-ball. However, the TV umpire relied on the Hawk-Eye system, which showed Kohli was ahead of the crease, so Kohli was given out, much to his disappointment with the third umpire's decision.

Kohli Accepts the Fine

In a statement, the IPL mentioned that during the match at Eden Gardens against KKR, RCB batter Virat Kohli was fined 50% of his match fee for breaching Article 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct Level-1. He accepted the charges against him and the penalty imposed by the match referee.
