India Eyes World Cup Redemption as Semifinal Showdown with New Zealand Looms: A Chance to Rewrite 2019 Defeat

File

The Indian team has reached the semifinals of the World Cup. Besides India, South Africa and Australia have secured spots in the last four. According to World Cup playing conditions, the team finishing first in the league round will face the fourth-placed team, while the second-placed team will take on the third-placed team. India is set to finish on top of the league round. Meanwhile, a swap between Australia and South Africa for the second and third positions is possible.

Currently, Temba Bavuma's team is in second place, and Australia is in third. The fourth-place team is yet to be determined, but New Zealand is almost certain to qualify. New Zealand has 10 points with a net run rate of +0.743, significantly higher than Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan needs to win against England with a margin of 287+ runs or within 284 balls, while Afghanistan requires a victory by 438+ runs, making it nearly impossible. New Zealand is likely to qualify for the semifinals.

This could be an opportunity for India to seek redemption for the 2019 World Cup loss. Indian fans might witness a replay of the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand. Back then, the Kiwis defeated Virat Kohli's team. Now, Rohit Sharma has a chance to avenge Kohli and MS Dhoni's loss. Dhoni's last international match was in that tournament, and Team India has a splendid opportunity for payback.

However, India's semifinal record hasn't been exceptional. This is the eighth time Team India has reached the World Cup semifinals. New Zealand, if it qualifies, will be in its ninth World Cup semifinal. India has advanced to the final only three times, facing defeat in the remaining four semifinals.

India reached the semifinals before the World Cup in 1983, 1987, 1996, 2003, 2011, and 2015. In 1983, under Kapil Dev's captaincy, India defeated England in the semifinals by six wickets and went on to win the World Cup by defeating West Indies in the final. In 1987, India faced England again in the semifinals and suffered a 35-run defeat. In 1996, India's semifinal match against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to crowd disruption, and Sri Lanka was declared the winner. In 2003, under Sourav Ganguly's leadership, India defeated Kenya by 91 runs in the semifinals but lost to Australia in the final by 125 runs. In 2011, India faced Pakistan in the semifinals, winning by 29 runs and subsequently winning the World Cup by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.

In 2015, India topped its group but lost to Australia by 95 runs in the semifinals. In 2019, India finished at the top of the round-robin format but faced a defeat against New Zealand in the semifinals by 18 runs. Despite being at the top, India has faced semifinal defeats in the last two World Cups, causing concern among Indian fans.

In the same year, India had defeated New Zealand in the league round of the World Cup. If India manages to overcome New Zealand in the semifinals, it could be seen as redemption for the 2019 loss. However, India has a mixed record in the semifinals, facing victories in 1983 and 2011 but defeats in 1987 and 1996.

This World Cup presents an opportunity for India to win the title for the third time and end the ICC Trophy drought of ten years. India last won the ICC title in 2013 in the form of the Champions Trophy.
